Most heat pump sales conversations present two options: go all-electric with a heat pump and electric strip-heat backup, or keep things as they are. There's a third option that gets less airtime: pair a heat pump with the gas furnace you already own, and let a control system hand off between them automatically. That's a dual-fuel, or hybrid, system, and it's a legitimate first choice in the right circumstances, not just a compromise for people unsure about going electric.
How the switchover actually works
The heat pump and furnace don't run together. A control board, sometimes built into the thermostat, sometimes a separate dual-fuel kit, picks one or the other based on outdoor temperature, switching over at a setpoint you or your installer configure, typically somewhere between 25°F and 40°F. Above it, the heat pump handles everything, since it's still cheaper per BTU than gas at that point for most utility rate combinations. Below it, the furnace takes over, since the heat pump's falling capacity and rising cost-per-BTU cross below what gas costs.
Some newer control systems go further and compare live electricity and gas rates rather than using a fixed temperature, switching over whenever the math favors it that hour. The colder your design temperature and the cheaper your gas relative to electricity, the more hours a year the furnace is doing the economically correct thing.
You want zero single point of failure
Two independent heat sources means a compressor failure in January doesn't mean no heat, it means falling back to the furnace until it's repaired.
Check this before assuming rebate eligibility
